"Black Hills paradise – This is an awesome place to stay. The view to wake up to every morning was beautiful. You are not far from the places you want to visit but far enough to get away and just relax for a day if you want." –Melissa

The Owl Cabin at Freebird Ranch is a new vacation home styled in mid-century decor. Great care was taken to ensure that our guests were provided a beautiful and comfortable home to live in while visiting the Black Hills. Nemo is centrally located in the hills and everything the Black Hills has to offer is close! The Owl is one of three homes on Freebird Ranch's 20 acres.

The east side of the property frames an unobstructed view of Nemo Mountain. There is a wild brook trout stream at the base of the mountain and the entire mountain is owned by the USFS, so your view is rock formations and Ponderosa pines with beautiful sunrises and reflective sunsets.

Each house at Freebird Ranch has it's own 60Mbs DSL and fast Mesh WiFi and both TVs have Roku streaming of Netflix, Amazon Video, Music and more.

The Owl is a newly constructed vacation home. It is located right in front of the bluffs of Nemo and has an unobstructed view and property extends right to the bluff which has a beautiful trout stream running along its base.

When you walk in the front door you enter the mud room that has chairs to sit down on while you take off your shoes, a coat rack and a shoe rack. Then you enter the great room with a dining area that seats 6-8 people, and two couches (one is a corner sectional). There is also a galley kitchen with all new appliances and it is fully stocked with furnishings, condiments and some food items. Through the great room into the wide hallway and to the right you will find the 3/4 bath and laundry room. Next, right from the hallway is the second bedroom that has a queen bed and two XL bunks that are quite sturdy and are built into the wall. Also from the hallway is the master en suite. It has a king bed, dresser, TV and fireplace. Its full bath has a corner tub/shower combo.

The entire house and porch/deck is for guest use.

Nemo is known for it's cool mountain air that moves in every evening, but for those unusual very-warm days, we have a portable air-conditioner to keep things comfortable. And also nearby is the poolhouse with a (seasonal, approximately June through September) 40' heated salt water swimming pool and a rec-room with pool-table, foosball, and exercise equipment are on the Ranch property and are for all Freebird Ranch guests (10am - 8pm). Nothing like a cool dip on a warm day!

Also for all to enjoy is the walking path along Box Elder creek.

We live in a property adjacent to this property, so we are close by if you need us.

Other things to note. Nemo is centrally located in the Black Hills with easy access to the cities of Deadwood, Rapid City, Sturgis, Spearfish, and Hill City to name a few. Also in the area are many popular destinations such as Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, The Badlands, The Needles, Caves, Spearfish Canyon, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country, Beautiful Lakes, and Terry Peak. For more information on the area's attractions and activities, click The Black Hills menu item on this website! The property is bordered by the Black Hills National Forest and a year round creek that is the perfect habitat for wildlife, including beautiful brookies (catch and release fly-fishing)!

We look forward to you vacationing here in Nemo.

A Real Treasure in Nemo, South Dakota!

Reviewed: Jun 2021
I booked this fabulous cottage (house) during the pandemic when my husband and I were searching for a great spot to celebrate our 40th anniversary! We wanted to explore some history, do some hiking, enjoy the outdoors, and find accommodations that had a great view but were fresh and modern. I didn't think I would find everything on my list, but we found it all in the Freebird Ranch property and Owl Cabin! It's tucked at the base of Nemo Mountain with a beautiful stream and horses grazing on the property. The best surprise is there's a saltwater pool and workout room steps away. The pool was amazing!
Bruce and Traci have thought of every amenity imaginable, and it's easy to see why people move to South Dakota! Freebird Ranch is well-situated between all the major historical sites like Mt. Rushmore (30 min.), Crazy Horse Memorial, Deadwood, the Badlands (that's about 1.5 hours away), Sturgis, Custer State Park, Wall Drugstore, Spearfish Canyon, Rapid City, and so much more. The view when you start your day or watch the sun set is perfection. We went to church across the street, rented ATVs across the street, and enjoyed several dinners at the Brandin Iron Restaurant (also across the street!). The chef/owner of the restaurant has a great menu with lots of beer choices and some really nice wine choices. The people are warm and friendly, and Bruce and Traci are a delight to talk with and have as hosts. We learned all about this great small town of about 340 people! If you want a quiet space to enjoy the great outdoors and enjoy a newer house with Scandinavian-style furnishings, book with Bruce and Traci soon!

Modern Black Hills oasis

Such a lovely property tucked in a secluded valley with easy access to all that the Black Hills has to offer. We were there with our 11 & 13 yr old daughters to escape the city during COVID and distance learning. The house was modern, the internet was fast, and to say it was well appointed would be an understatement. Our goal was to visit a Black Hills attraction or hike each day but loved our time back at the property and could have enjoyed just staying there the entire visit. Our hosts, Bruce and Traci, were great communicators and were always available on an as-needed basis. We look forward to return to this gem of a property.

We had such a lovely time staying at The Owl house in Nemo. It was a perfect location. The property was impeccable and the house was so clean and comfortable. Surprisingly, the king bed was on of the most comfortable beds I've slept in. The huge patio, games and walk-way's through the field were the best part. We definitely plan on coming back at some point.

Comfortable, Luxurious, and Stress-Free

This is by far, one of the best vacation rentals we have stayed at over the last five years. The house was exceptionally clean and well-organized. Traci has thought of every possible detail to make your stay pleasant. Not only is the house spotless, but the attention to design and decor is fabulous as well (something similar to Dwell Magazine). From the well-organized medicine cabinets (stocked with extra toiletries), to the extra towels and linens, and the boxed milk in the fridge - our stay was comfortable, luxurious, and stress-free. The location, although remote, was a perfect location for exploring the Mount Rushmore area, as well as The Badlands.

She provided everything she could think of. It was so thoughtful setup. Then the little town Nemo was amazing! This small town had everything you need for a peaceful getaway. This home was conveniently located to all these wonderful places in Nemo. There was construction going on, however it wasnt a nuisance at all. We have special children and a service dog and found everybody to be understanding, polite and welcoming. We love it, Thanks for helping make our vacation wonderful!

Amazing place!

What an amazing place! The location is convenient to everything and had the privacy and views we were hoping for! Plus, you get to stay in such a chic mid century mod space. The place was so clean it felt like we were the first guests to stay after it was built. Traci left us a bottle of wine and brought us fresh veggies from the garden. Check in was a breeze and communication was timely and not excessive. There is a music speaker (Alexa). There is a propane fire pit out back. Didnt get to try the infrared sauna. Lots of deer! Check out the maze hike near Steamboat recreation area.

Beautiful with mid century touches

This place was beautiful with the mid century mod touches. The two bathrooms were perfect for our two families and my kids really enjoyed the bunk beds! Having laundry facilities was a plus and Traci did a great job making sure there were plenty of amenities for any need that might arise. We had fun watching the deer in the lawn each night and found this to be the perfect spot for two families to have private bedrooms yet a communal family room to congregate. It was also a great base camp for many of the attractions in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Owl and would love to visit again!

We scheduled 6 nights, added a 7th and were given a free 8th. We would still be there if life were that easy. The owners were great. Quickly responded to our questions. You can tell they are totally engaged in making their clients happy. This is an amazing house in an amazing location in the Black Hills. So well-appointed. There is not a thing missing you may need. Bandaids, of course, tooth brush, shampoo, laundry detergent, rice steamer, crock pot, why not. It's ridiculous. It's all there.. The list is too long and all tucked away in this clutter free home. I will return next summer and will send all my friends (and their friends).. I just need to make sure I get my week! Nemo is my new favorite spot for quick access to the southern or northern hills. See you next year!

Great Black Hills central location

Great place to stay and to use as a base to explore the Black Hills. Located in north central Black Hills, it's easy to get to all the places we wanted to go... Rushmore, Needles, Crazy Horse, Custer Park, Deadwood, Sturgis, and Rapid City. Nemo has a great small town feel, and the rental has wide open views of the rock ridge overlooking the town. The house has everything you might need, only need to bring food if you are going to cook your own meals. Loved it here.

Wow!!!!!!! Is all I can say!!

Traci and Bruce are the most awesome hosts a person could have!!! The property is beautiful and well cared for. They are very accessible if needed for anything. The only thing that made the view of Nemo Mountain better.....was a cup of coffee in the very comfortable outdoor chairs. :) Not to mention, you have the whole view to yourself. The beds are comfortable and pillows lush. There are plenty of towels and anything you would need stocked in the bathrooms. The tub was great to have after a long hot day of playing in the Black Hills, but the sauna was the icing on the cake!!! The kitchen was also well stocked of anything you would need. The vintage furniture is very nicely upholstered and they did a great job with the decorative touches throughout the house. The energy flowed nicely. The bottle of wine that they left for us was a nice welcome gift. Thank you! The house was one of the most clean and tidy places we have stayed at!!! I will definitely tell all of my people about this place!!!
